A little story

THE CROCODILE CHAINED TO THE PALM TREE, A SYMBOL THAT HAS BECOME EMBLEMATIC

“The great lord of the waters, the crocodile sits at the feet of his queen Cleopatra, of almost divine beauty in her golden finery and with her jet-black hair. Sobek, the god with the crocodile head, adorns the palace statues promising to bring fertility to the land and “resurrection” to nature.

The crocodile is sacred and fearsome, just like the Egyptian queen whose reign was brought to an abrupt end by Julius Caesar’s adopted son, Octavius’, victory at the great battle of Actium in 31 BC.

To propagate his own legend and glory, Octavius, the future Caesar Augustus, issued a new coin: the Dupondius featuring a crocodile. Chained to the palm tree, which is sacred to Apollo (Octavian’s patron god), the captured crocodile represents Rome’s total domination over the Land of the Pharaohs.

This copper coin was minted in the heart of the “Colonia Augusta Nemausus”, which today goes by the name of Nîmes. Centuries later it became the emblem of this city in the Gard department, the capital of the Costières de Nîmes wines.
